i think we should jus be happy there are ANY contributors to the scene left,
Picking one above the other is just ridiculous, just give these five chaps (and all the other ten to twelve!?) the credit they deserve and give veteran fAn the lifetime achievement award he deserves.
Playing a game you've got talent (in short: good at pointing your mouse somewhere combined with a strategical overview of where your opponents might be and where your enemies are) and being the best isn't easy, but if you put it in effort you can reach the top. Tbh, my skillceiling was around subtop (around 30th clan) in Europe, but for others the skillceiling is higher (ie. the five who are running for best player of 2011, kudos to them).
Contributing to the scene is a whole different ballgame, especially in communities as small as the Day of Defeat: Source one. You put in a lot of effort and usually you just get some random bullshit thrown over you. The writing for zP! was in a slump before
aKaa and
nbad went to active again and
weta,
RORSCHACH,
Apone,
HerObberBob and
Lmng joined the writing staff, so they are regarded in a positive light.
Solo just took over the job of head admin from
fAn which is rather unforgiving, seeing fAn is regarded by the community (including me) as the best admin of all times. Also, Solo enforced the change from 100 tick to 66 tick, which is arguable. iirc the vote ended in 50/50 and Solo took the backing of CSS for granted, saying the Source engine runs best on 66 tick for competitive play (and there might be some numbers backing this up). Now he gets an insane amount of flame for this decision, which are basicly based on a feeling we have toward a game running on either 66 tick or 100 tick (i didn't notice any difference). Tbh, this community feels like a bunch of girls complaining about a FEELING (sorry ninii, sorry bri :) For one, we shouldn't project this anger towards the game on Solo, but towards Valve for leaving our beloved game behind for more than 3(?) years and only adding silly holiday achievements.
Some food for thought: As an ESL admin (iirc from my time being one) you have to check every match for irregularities (rcon + steamid check, Aequitas check (in my time, now Linesman) and hand out according PPs), this took around 10 minutes a match, and iirc we had to do 10-20 matches a week, but this might be more for Solo & co at the moment after seeing the recent decline in ESL admins.
As a zP! contributor you have to count for around .5 hour of work for a Scene news article and around 1 to 2 hours of work for a Coverage article. a Feature can be anything in between.
All these hours of work, for what? Nearly nothing. No pay, no real promotion available (zP! and ESL are the biggest organisation in Day of Defeat: Source you can work for). Basicly, they're doing this for the game that they love and might even do this for you.
TLDR: With all due respect for the players, teams and moviemakers nominated for best, most improved and to-look-out-for awards for 2011, i think we should end this year by applauding the entire admin staff of ESL, the entire staff of zP!, the guys who run cups (
rippeR: DiD, thnx) and try to run cups and other stuff through FirstFrag (ie. BtB), the guys who run nightcups in a proper fashion and the unbelievable French community who manage to host LAN after LAN. (i might even try and visit GameOnLive)
Without you guys, this game would be more dead than it is by now. Cheers! :)
